ROMEO-195  Week 03 Blog

Week 03 for ROMEO company was unbelievably another insane week! Every recruit watched the five to ten minute “It’s Not Just Eight Weeks” YouTube video on Coast Guard basic training, but none of us expected the high paced, loud, and overall physically and mentally stressful environment to persist for so long. We are nearing the start of Week 04 and ROMEO company has been full throttle wheels burning out since we stepped the bus at Sexton Hall!

For some, such as our family back home, those three weeks may have been long, but for ROMEO it is one continuous nightmare you cannot wake up from. Now at 17 losses with others still on probation, the pack has continued to thin as ROMEO sinks below the pressure or floats over it. Somehow, between all the times ROMEO was getting “hooked up” by the Company Commanders, we had some great experiences this week! Some of the highlights of ROMEO’s Week 03 of training were finishing up our seamanship qualifications, being issued our military identification cards, and coming together more as a company than we have in the weeks prior.

This week ROMEO spent time over at the seamanship building which is located over near the bay. It would be a great view to see to and from class but ROMEO company is focused on keeping their “eyes in the boat”, fixated on the back of the recruit’s head in front of them. Our seamanship courses covered lookout protocols, knot tying, nautical terms, boat nomenclature, and helmsman commands. These are all valuable skills which are worked into our everyday lives since they will certainly be utilized at our first units.

An event that every ROMEO recruit was excited for was obtaining our official military identification cards! Obtaining these cards is a big step for every recruit since it significantly adds to the feeling of what we are hoping to accomplish here. For now, ROMEO has just enough time to think about precisely what is going on in front of them and not much else, getting these cards reminds us of the sacrifice and duty we are to give in service to our country after this craziness is over. Remembering the purpose of why we are here helps us to push through our training despite the pain we feel. Receiving that thin piece of plastic solidified our identity as military members with a duty to our country. On a side note, our “fresh cuts” resulted in some hilarious identification photos.

Lastly, ROMEO company made some great steps this week. The pain and misery surrounding us has forced us to come together to find happiness in the little things like yum yum bars, letters from family and friends, and the moments we successfully complete time objectives. We are learning to work together little by little motivating one another whether it be to not sandbag through incentive training or to stay awake in class. In the Coast Guard, we are a small team with a big job and it only works if we all work together.

In summary, Week 03 for ROMEO company was another arduous uphill climb battling sickness, physical training, and attempting to meet the unrelenting standards of our Company Commanders. Now worn from three weeks of battle with our bodies, unauthorized habits, and discipline, we will have to come together if any of us hope to make it through recruit training.

Post Script: There is a toilet which almost continuously and randomly flushes in our squadbay. It is rumored Chief Pullen once screamed at it for not flushing in the position of attention, and it has yet to stop flushing.
