Week 05 Summary

 

Motivation is a choice, not a feeling. We are not in the business of feeling sorry for ourselves or have room for selfish incentives. We took an oath to sacrifice ourselves for the well being of others, to always be ready to execute a mission with fast precision, and to finish the job whether we are exhausted or in pain. PAPA-193 had a history class this week. Since August 4, 1790 the United States Coast Guard has become a multi-mission branch of the service that include everything from protecting our borders and waterways to search and rescue missions. We read about the heroes who helped shape the Coast Guard like Douglas Munro who is the only member to receive the Medal of Honor. He placed himself between the Japanese and 500 Marines with five of his small boats so that they could complete their mission. He was fatally wounded but was the embodiment of honor, respect, and devotion to duty. PAPA-193 strives to live the core values, be selfless, and disciplined. We have slipped throughout the week but we come together and find ways to improve as we keep gaining ground. We received our tropical blues and dress uniforms this week. As we looked at ourselves, we saw what we could be as we continue to earn the privilege of wearing these uniforms. A pivotal point in our week was receiving our orders and finding out where we will begin our careers. We will be spread all across the United States on cutters, small boat stations, and bases which will be an opportunity for us to display who we’ve become at TRACEN Cape May.

 

Unfortunately we lost our military bearing in the excitement of receiving our orders. Our Company Commanders were none too happy about that. We spent the next 24 hours being treated like children by our Company Commanders. We weren’t allowed to sound off, stand at the position of attention, or have time objectives to meet which felt degrading. We are proud of this way of life and have grown accustom to the pride we feel when we succeed. Fortunately, we were able to redeem ourselves hours later after sweating for our lack of discipline and were able to go back to screaming till our heads pop off and going to the bathroom so fast we break a sweat because that is our normal now.

 

 

The burning desire is in us to be the best company here; we not only want this for ourselves, but for our Lead Company Commander and Assistant           Company Commanders. They are either serious or crazy enough to spend time away from their families to train us, even force us sometime to surpass our flaws and adjust us accordingly. We need to show them that their efforts aren’t in vain. They are all going back to the fleet after we graduate and we want them to look back on their last company with satisfaction. Even though we still have problems within the company we have moments when we excel. Everyday our close order drill becomes perfected. We had our confidences course, which was one of the greatest experiences our company has had yet. PAPA-193 was hurdling, climbing, and defeating any obstacle that came in our way. We were cheering for each other to push forward until we all crossed the finish line as a company. We also were able to join the senior company run throughout Cape May while the civilians cheered for us. We ran with our heads held high as we ran behind our company commanders and yelled cadence. We were proud to be a part of the moment and have this opportunity to become Coast Guardsman. Perception is reality. If we can come together in those moments, maintain our military bearing at all times, and stay focused on our objectives, and the mission of being the best recruit possible then we will thrive as a company. This is a moment in our lives we can never replace and it is time for PAPA-193 to be a success!
