Week 05 Summary


Most people have a basic understanding of boot camp. The simplest explanation of the structure is: boot camp beats you down and then builds you up. This week, we started building don’t get us wrong- we were still beat this week, but there were more classes and milestones this week than any other week prior. Training has shifted in a big way to focus on really truly getting us ready to be adults in the fleet. We’ve started to self-manage ourselves we wake ourselves up, we march ourselves around, we tuck ourselves in- we are responsible to know where to be and when. In short we are expected to conduct ourselves as adults. Our company commanders are still around to monitor our behavior, check in on our progress and issue disciplinary punishments as necessary, but a large portion of our training is now recruit run. There is a good reason for this soon we will become part of the fleet.

This sentiment became very real for us as we reached a huge milestone in our training this week- we received our orders. We know where we will be stationed and what kind of job we will step into. Most of us are very happy with our assignments and compliment the detailer for doing a job well done. This is an exciting moment for us and we are thrilled to know exactly how we will be of service to our country. Our classes this week fell into two categories: Things we will use in the fleet, and general information we should know before reporting to our first unit. We learned about proper radio procedures, how to wear a life vest, and the structure of a boat crew. Now that things are becoming more serious, we are responding by becoming more serious about our lessons. One of our more prudent lessons this week was our financial management class. Let’s be honest, most of us weren’t really looking forward to this class as we expected it to be dry and boring. This seemed like the type of class in which we could expect a fellow shipmate to fall asleep in, resulting in further beatings, but in actuality this class turned out to be one of the most helpful we ever had. We learned of horror stories of fresh out of boot camp Coasties making all the wrong mistakes. They would impulsively buy the latest and greatest equipped sports car, only to have it eat away at their savings like a parasite. Needless to say, by the end of class our instructor had each of us rethinking our priorities. Now a 1992 beater corolla with 200,000 miles on it doesn’t look too bad after all.


We also learned important lessons about investing. Basically, if we’re smart with savings and investing our money, we’re going to be millionaires, if we play the game right. In addition to classes we had other kinds of tests this week. The first, a uniform inspection by our section commander with the golden rule being: any 03 discrepancies in your uniform or required knowledge and you get “Extra Attention”. Most of us escaped unharmed with nothing but stiff legs and a racing heart, but some of us, well… some of us got extra attention. Our other assessment was on marching it; uh-it didn’t go too well. We’ve spent much of the week working on it though and are looking forward to a retest.

All in all, Quebec-193 had a jam packed week. Sure we made some mistakes, but we learned a lot as well. The moment we got our orders, things became real for us. We look forward to improving ourselves in the weeks to come as we ready ourselves for the fleet.
