Today started out mundane enough for Tango Company – we spent our Saturday morning executing a “Field Day” of the squad bay, which is basically getting on our hands and knees and scrubbing every inch top to bottom. A far cry from our previous lives of Saturday mornings spent in front of the television in our pajamas. This week has been Search and Rescue (SAR) Week for us, which means we had 15 minutes to wake up, do morning muster, get dressed, and march to chow. It’s a lot to do in so short a time, and making the time objective has been a struggle3, but today…today made every single struggle boot camp has thrown at us so far completely and absolutely worth every drop of sweat shed.

After cleaning, we marched out into the brisk, and blustery morning air, and got to tackle the Confidence Course – a big permanent installation obstacle course here on the regiment. Last night, we all got our orders. It was such an exciting event, and we had plenty of excess energy to work off from the thrill. We were doing our best to keep our military bearing in light of all the excitement, so this was the perfect opportunity to let some of it out. Our Lead Company Commander authorized us to work together as a company, and even gave us permission to cheer our shipmates on! The course is daunting to look at – some of the obstacles were unnerving to tackle, but with the help and support of our shipmates, we overcame it! And then…we had to sweat. A round of incentive training in front of Healy Hall. That was nothing new, or so we thought…after having us scream the Coast Guard Ethos at the top of our lungs in plank position, our Lead Company Commander told us about the company a week above us, week six going on week seven, Sierra, earning their colors the night before. The company two weeks ahead of us, Romeo, week seven going on week eight, also earned their colors this week. Our Lead Company Commander proceeded to ask us, “You know Tango is performing at a week level ahead? Do you think we will earn our colors soon?” Tango replied eagerly in the affirmative. That is when our Lead Company Commander called for us to about face, and the reason we were currently sweating was revealed. Our Assistant Company Commanders, in league with our Company Mentor, used the distraction to bring out the colors for Tango-193! In week FIVE! We are told this is an uncommon honor at the Cape May Training Center. There it was, fluttering in the Cape May winds in the middle of the parade field! We were slack-jawed and speechless until our Lead Company Commander said “Well, I’M not going to go get them.”

There was a brief moment of hesitation before the entire company bounded onto the parade field and seized the flag. We swarmed it en mass, chanting, “TANGO! TANGO! TANGO!”, and spontaneously broke into the Coast Guard Ethos, roaring it at the top of our lungs in the throes of our celebration. It was Tango’s proudest moment, and one none of us will ever forget – the moment we earned our colors! We even got to sing cadence with our Lead Company Commander as we proudly marched our new colors, decorated by the two pennants we have already earned, to chow for the first time. Terrible Tango is turning the corner. We have our colors, our orders, and our “Dress Blues” graduation uniforms this week – Tango-193 is another week closer to becoming full-fledged Coast Guardsmen!
