Alpha 199 Recruit Journal Week 03/05

International Maritime Signal Flag Alpha

Formed: July 21, 2020
Graduates:  September 11, 2020

“You are going to make your call”. With those words our Lead Company Commander popped every member of Alfa-199 to a position of attention. We rapidly rushed to our respective squad bays to square ourselves away, while others, sat around the quarterdeck and got those five minutes that we have all been longing for.  Yes, Alfa-199 got their orders and now everybody knows where their careers in the Coast Guard will start.  Some of us will go to Alaska and a few of us will go to Florida and few lucky shipmates will stay close to Cape May.

This was one of the moments we had been waiting for since the beginning of boot camp, and we got them.  Now we look forward to the other big day, graduation!

This week was full of ups and downs, are orders and phone calls weren’t the most significant part of the week.  We had a survival float class, and luckily for us all, we had passed with flying colors.  Another “up” for the company was Seamanship class, out by the water.  We all took part in helm commands simulation, which started out pretty rocky, but we got the hang of it at the last minute.  This week we passed seabags, sat in a sniper position, pulled line, and even stared at the bulkhead.  Through all of our ups and downs we have gotten stronger, louder, and faster as a company.  We have also learned just like we triumphed together we paid for our mistakes as a company.

Chow three times a day, also brightens A-199’s day, but realistically there was one day this week, one moment in the day that made the difference.  The moment our squad leader took the stand, all of them.  We finally felt the intensity and fire within ourselves.  We exposed our ears to motivation and power.  It was the speech of all speeches, which should end each week.  We have no idea what truly lies ahead, but it does not matter, as long as we fight and commit to being the best.  Reveille, fire fire fire! Find some real estate!

This week was challenging and phenomenal, we broke down and we were built back up.  We beat ourselves up and we got beat up and down by our Company Commanders, who say we don’t deserve it.  This week was our transformation week, our literal morphing week.  While we have so much to improve on, we really learned how to work together.  Next challenge is simple, communication and whatever lies in the mind beneath our Company Commanders’ black hat.
