Kilo 199 Recruit Journal Week 07

International Maritime Signal Flag Kilo

Formed: October 13, 2020
Graduates:  December 04, 2020

Week 07 started off with a literal bang as Kilo-199 was taught the marksmanship essentials of a sig sauer p229.  There were many steady hands as there was a more relaxed attitude than Kilo-199 was used to; this correlated directly with their earning of the marksmanship pennant and shipmate Torchia winning top shot.  Tuesday was focused on health, fitness and well-being as Kilo-199 took on their final fitness assessment.  CPR and First Aid certifications were to follow.

Wednesday further sealed the fate of Kilo-199 as they all signed their official orders.  Administration time was the focus for all recruits so they could contact their units, sponsors and further their house hunting for their new home.  Later that night the Kilo recruits got another surprise when they were told to don their Service Dress Blues, a uniform never before worn, in less than 08 minutes.  Ties were flying and pins needed to be placed but Petty Officer Heller instructed the recruits to enter the empty squadbay.  Petty Officer Heller gave Kilo-199 a crash course on the “SDB” in order to have a professional military appearance in their new careers.

Thursday was the day that Kilo-199 was waiting for; Thanksgiving.  This was a day where the recruits could relax, enjoy the delicious meal the hardworking galley staff prepared and talk to their loved ones after what felt like an eternity.  Cell phones were authorized!  Faces were glued to screens and it was a happy atmosphere as the recruits had a virtual reunion with everyone they were thankful for.  Kilo-199 pushed through their meals to get straight to desserts donated by families through Operation Fireside.  Captain Felger made an appearance and offered words of encouragement and stories of amazing things to come for these future Coasties.

Friday; a day of challenge.  Kilo-199 was tested on their manual of arms and close order drill.  Petty Officer Heller asked, “is anyone nervous?” Only to be met with many raised hands of confirmation.  “Let’s crush this”, was volleyed back by Petty Officer Heller and Kilo-199 passed with a 9/10 on both Close or Drill and Manual of Arms!  What a relief, but not for long.  Kilo-199 was then awarded with the coveted U.S. Coast Guard ball cap.  With new found confidence the recruits were marched to the classroom to take and pass their Final Exam with flying Kilo colors.

Saturday was a day for relaxation as they got the chance to blow off some steam and settle any beef they may have had at the pugil sticks.  Mouth guards were flying, but it ended with handshakes and smiles as the recruits headed to their on-base liberty.  Cell phones were authorized and recruits took advantage of the exchange and all of the junk food it had to offer.  Another glimpse into the outside world and enjoyed burgers, fries and a beautiful view of the Cape May Harbor, at the Harborview restaurant.  A pleasant week for Kilo-199 as they head in to their final week of training.
